Here we go into game 7 of the 2016 World Series between the Chicago Cubs and the Cleveland Indians. The Cubs have not won the World Series since 1908 and the Indians have not won since 1948 and it all comes down to one game. Playing in game 7 of the World Series is every kid’s dream who plays Little League baseball and I was no different. All of the players playing in this Fall Classic have been dreaming about this game for multiple decades, since the time they roamed the fields in their Little League uniforms. I can still remember the whiffle ball games with the neighborhood kids where imaginations ran wild, where you played the make believe game 7 of the World Series, pretending to be your favorite player. As a kid there were many times that I played as Mickey Mantle.
For the Cubs and Indians players, the dream of game 7 is now a reality. One team, 25 players and their coaches, will become World Champions. After decades of practice and preparation, the dream will finally come true. Today we will all watch some of the greatest athletes in sports battle for the same outcome. We will all witness the incredible talent that these athletes display. What we won’t see is all the blood, sweat, and tears that it has taken for all of them to get to this final game. We won’t see the decades of sacrifice made by these athletes and their families with no guarantee that this day would ever come.
What we will witness, in awe, is the final product of their special talents. My wish is for every player on both teams to play the greatest game they have ever played and let the best team win. There is no greater feeling in sports than to be the last man standing.
What are your dreams today? What does your World Series look like in your industry? It’s all about playing in the game of life at your pinnacle. Most people give up too early when it gets hard. These athletes playing in the World Series have been through massive ups and downs to get to this point. Og Mandino says, “I will persist until I succeed.”
Do you have the attitude of Mr. Og Mandino with all of your goals and dreams? It’s never too late to get started and it’s never too early. As 2016 is coming to a close, it’s a great time to get a head start on 2017 in making it a World Series year for you. As you settle in to watch game 7 of the World Series, don’t forget what these men have gone through to live out their childhood dreams. It is incredible inspiration for all of us to know that everything is possible.
